About Interstate 80
Running more than 2,900 miles of road, the I-80 was one of the original routes to make up the Interstate Highway System in 1956. The construction of the I-80 went into the 1980s, with 1986, completing the last part of the Interstate 80.
Considered to be the second-largest highway in the country, the I-80 is a marvel of a road connecting major business hubs and cities such as Oakland, Salt Lake City, and more. The west end of the highway starts at San Francisco, California, with the east end of the I-80 ending in Teaneck, New Jersey.
The highway is not only a road for daily commuters or travelers but also the primary component that spurs economic activity in the region. Semi-trucks, long-haul trucks, and commercial trucks record millions of miles yearly on the I-80, delivering goods from one end of the country to California, the most populated state in the United States.
Drunk and distracted driving are the leading causes of accidents in the country. With so much movement going on the I-80, the risk of getting into an accident always requires drivers to be more vigilant than usual.
Recent Accidents on the Interstate 80
California Highway Patrol Gets into an Investigation
On October 4th, 2021, at the Madison Avenue exit on the I-80, a green pickup truck went offroad into two disabled vehicles parked on the side of the freeway. However, in doing so, the pickup also rammed into the two pedestrians just at the side of the parked vehicles. A 26-year-old pedestrian died immediately where the crash happened. The second car accident victim got rushed to the hospital with a significant injury, where he underwent medical treatment but soon died due to complications from the severe injuries.
Considered a hit and run since the pickup driver made his escape after the violent accident, the California Highway Patrol has gotten involved in the investigation to capture the culprit.
Crash on Westbound I-80
On October 5th, 2021, a crash between two vehicles occurred on the I-80, leading to one of the vehicles swerving and crashing into an SUV, causing a three-vehicle accident. At least one person received a significant injury while two others got minor injuries from the accident, but unfortunately, one driver in a Honda Accord died at the accident scene.
Hit and Run in Berkeley
On September 13th, 2021, two cars collided on the I-80 in Berkeley, resulting in the drivers getting out and arguing over the accident. Unfortunately, the damaged vehicles were still on the highway, posing potential accident threats to other drivers.
An incoming car tried to swerve through the parked vehicles but hit the two drivers arguing on the I-80 at high speed, causing instant death. Panicked, the driver decided to speed away from the accident scene turning the incident into a hit-and-run.
These are just different types of accidents occurring on the I-80, with minor accidents not happening on the news. Accidents can financially cripple a car accident victim, but having an experienced car accident attorney can help provide legal representation to recover compensation for the loss.
Who Is Liable for an Accident on the I-80?
With so many different types of vehicles traveling on the I-80, who do you hold liable for an accident? Do you have the trucking company responsible for the truck accident or the manufacturing company for the vehicle defect in your car causing the accident?
If a company gets involved in an accident, then the difficulty of getting compensation increases since these companies retain the services of law firms for such incidents. While on the other hand, if the accident occurred due to unmaintained roads, the local municipality or state government may be responsible for the damages. However, having a qualified personal injury attorney to represent you can ensure you get the maximum compensation for your loss.
An experienced personal injury attorney will also help determine which parties to hold accountable. For example, for a truck accident, an attorney may have the trucking company and the driver responsible or go after the company. Depending on the unique circumstances of each accident, a qualified attorney will be better able to guide you and give you the legal advice you need to move forward.
