California State Route 1, also part of the Pacific Coast Highway, spans 656 miles from Dana Point, Orange County, to Leggett, Mendocino County, and features some of the most stunning scenery in California. Major Accidents on the PCH
Collision with a Garbage Truck
On October 21, 2021, just before the Tom Lantos Tunnels, an SUV crashed into a garbage truck, causing severe property damage to the SUV and serious injuries to the driver inside. The California Highway Patrol quickly responded to the emergency calls and reached out just in time to close the roads for 2 hours before reopening. The injured SUV driver was rushed to a nearby hospital to treat the wounds and conduct a further examination.
Flying Car off the Cliff near San Francisco
On September 16, 2021, the California Highway Patrol received an emergency call for an accident on the SR-1 near San Mateo County. As the first responders reached the accident site, they saw a vehicle at the bottom of the cliff next to the SR-1.
Witnesses stated that the driver drove off the side of the road and then down the cliff before ending up on the beach in San Mateo County. It remains unclear as to what caused the driver to drive off the cliff, but the injuries sustained from the accident were too much. The driver was dead, and the local authorities refused to pull the car up and block the roads.
Case of an Unfortunate Motorcyclist
A crash occurred on the SR-1 just a mile off Fort Ross Road on September 27, 2021. The California Highway Patrol reached the accident scene to find a dead man with a wrecked motorcycle in the middle of the road. The initial investigation revealed that the motorcyclist swerved off the road and hit a guard rail. The impact from the collision sent the motorcyclist flying off the bike onto the road.
Multi-vehicle Car Accident
On November 9, 2021, after receiving multiple emergency calls, local officers hurried on the scenic highway to the accident scene. They found numerous motor vehicles in a car accident just before Rockaway Beach Avenue. Highway 1 was temporarily closed, and the five-vehicle collision left two hospitalized, one of them in critical condition.
Multiple Injuries and One Motorcyclist Dead
On October 14, 2021, a multi-vehicle pileup on the SR-1 caused quite a commotion, with calls to the local police station beginning to ring. As emergency personnel arrived at the accident scene, they started taking life-saving measures for a severely injured motorcyclist. However, it was too late.
The motorcyclist died on the spot. Besides the death, there were many injured passengers and drivers from the accident. Immediate cleanup and investigation started to find out what happened.
